Trains and Railways – Spoken word
They rode the trains outback
they were the jobless, drifters, swagmen
seemingly carefree but victims of depression
some toiled, some not
hard was the lot of the city man gone bush
& lonely was the life without his family
Push to shove -he didn’t give a rat’s about anything
for such was the harsh life, and one just copped it on the chin.
but on the off chance there’d be the makings, he kept on travelling
with his bagman’s bible, the timetable
he rode the freight cars always hungry
Wagon jumping, the rolling easy
clickety clack clickety clack- the wheels a-turning
clickety clack
rocking them along like babies
to dreams upon the railway, laid down tracks of memories
from the shadows where yesterday echoes
clickety clack clickety clack
